Student overcomes language barrier

English is a second language for Niue-born Fridalynn Tohovaka. But that hasn’t stopped her from mastering three programmes at Future Skills Academy. “I struggled to keep up with studying but I survived,” the mother of two says.

Through sheer grit and determination, she has earned the NZ Certificate in Early Childhood Education (Level 2), the NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Healthcare Assistance Strand) (Level 3) and the NZ Certificate in Health & Wellbeing (Social & Community Services) (Level 4) with a strand in Mental Health and Addiction Support. “Having completed three New Zealand certificates is an accomplishment I’m most proud of.”

Future Skills Academy is a welcoming, comfortable environment for students, Fridalynn says, where accomplishments are acknowledged and problems are recognised. “My advice for students is to ask for help if they need anything because Future Skills Academy is there to help.” She savoured making friends with fellow students from diverse backgrounds. “I enjoyed building relationships and sharing food from different cultures.”

Born in Niue Island, she grew up with 17 siblings including three half-sisters. Fridalynn worked for a variety of companies including Kiwi Bacon Company and NZ Post. She modelled clothes part-time for Underground Fashion. A knee injury forced her to retire early from NZ Post. “While I was waiting for knee surgery, I studied at Future Skills Academy Royal Oak.”
