Future Skills Academy student Fatima Fifita has been rewarded for diligently completing tasks on an innovative online learning platform.
Fatima studies English, Maths, and Digital Literacy at our Manukau campus.
She and her classmates use an online learning platform called Pathways Awarua developed by the Tertiary Education Commission.
The platform supports adult and young adult learners to strengthen their literacy and numeracy skills in contexts that are relevant to New Zealanders.
Participants can achieve points, earn certificates and even win prizes. Fatima has just won a Samsung Galaxy A8 tablet as her prize.
Pathways Awarua Professional Learning Manager Michael Grawe was at our Manukau campus last week to present it to her.
Fatima says she’s thoroughly enjoyed using the Pathways Awarua platform. She has found the literacy exercises particularly helpful because English is her second language, after Tongan.
She says the tasks have helped her improve her vocabulary and express herself more clearly and confidently.
The platform has allowed her to continue working on her language skills during school holidays when she is unable to come to the campus because she’s home taking care of her four children.
Fatima loves the challenge of the tasks and the feeling of achievement when she gains points for getting the answers correct.
In the future, Fatima hopes to become a bus or truck driver. She says the English skills she’s gaining through her Future Skills study and the Pathways Awarua programme are helping her towards that goal.
