Phillip Martin is employing the skills he gained with us in his role at Wellington City Council. The building inspector says he is now equipped with the knowledge and confidence to carry out his role inspecting and assessing compliance for building work in accordance with legislation.
He is set to graduate in April from the NZ Diploma in Building Surveying (In Employment), Level 6. “The best part of the course was the tutor’s life experiences in the trades which made them very relatable, the course content, and applying this to my role.” Studying for the diploma was a job prerequisite, he says.
Phillip,49, worked as a plumber for more than 25 years and was self-employed for five years before joining the council.
Outside work, the Porirua resident delights in outdoor pursuits including sailing waka ama or outrigger canoes, 4x4 wheel driving and mountain biking. “I have done a Gravel Grind which is essentially bikepacking on gravel roads of New Zealand,” he says. “I had very minimal preparation in terms of physical training but I felt being a tradie at the time was enough fitness training. So, I decided to give it a crack with a few mates over a three-day period. We covered 740 km from Rotorua to Tokoroa over to Taumarunui through to Piopio, continuing around the coast to Raglan, then scooting over to Ngāruawāhia, Hamilton and back to Rotorua.
Phillip savoured facing the challenging terrain and weather along with soaking up the glorious backcountry scenery. “I enjoyed the comradery with like-minded people and the self-satisfaction in completing something you’ve never done before.”
