Studying proved so daunting at first that Vikavalu Tu’itavuki doubted she would reach the end of her health programme. But the mother of four graduates soon from the NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Care and Support), Level 4 at Manukau Campus. And she is thrilled to have been accepted to study Enrolled Nursing in February at Manukau Institute of Technology. “Many times I wanted to give up because I often felt like I was the dumb one in the health and wellbeing class,” she says. “But because of the support and encouragement I got every day from my classmates and my tutor, Dr Sadia Farzana, I decided to stay. Dr Sadia is the best tutor I have ever known- she’s one in a million.”
Tonga-born Vikavalu moved to Aotearoa when she was 16. For more than 30 years she has given back to the community as a support worker and rehabilitation coach at the Laura Fergusson Trust centre in Auckland. But the rehabilitation provider for young people with disabilities closed last year due to the financial fallout from the Covid-19 crisis. “One of the clients wanted me to look after him at home so I have been caring for him ever since.”
Vikavalu, of Mt Wellington, encourages prospective students to take the plunge and enrol at Future Skills Academy. “The tutors are supportive, always willing to help, the staff are friendly and the school’s in a great location with plenty of parking.”
