A new baby has joined our whānau. Emily is believed to be the first baby born to a Future Skills student this year. Mother Oranee Butkamdee is doing well after delivering her firstborn at Middlemore Hospital on 4 August, weighing 3 kg. She plans to return to Manukau campus after recovering to continue studying the NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Care and Support) Level 4.
Earlier Dr Sadia and fellow students surprised her with a baby shower. They decorated the class and gave the mum-to-be a $100 gift voucher before cutting a celebratory cake and sharing lunch.
“The school has been really understanding and so supportive,” says Oranthee, a health care assistant at an Auckland dementia unit. Tutor Dr Sadia Farzana says there were complications during the pregnancy “but I supported her in every possible way to complete her assessments and self-managed learning, until now, without any extensions and resubmissions. “She is full of positive energy and got the support from Future Skills Academy to complete most of her hours at her practicum placement while pregnant.”
