Want to ditch the cigarettes?Programme Coordinator Corbin Whanga advocates turning to Ready Steady Quit for help.He has educated Royal Oak students about the free stop smoking programme which supports people trying to kick the habit who live in the Auckland or Waitemata District Health Board regions.

Giving up smoking is not as simple as putting on a nicotine patch, Corbin says. “Breaking up with smoking is similar to breaking up in a relationship,” he says. “It’s your way of feeling good, that dopamine you get from having a smoke.” Ready Steady Quit offers people a four-week programme with individual or group support sessions. “You know that saying,’ if you fail to plan, you plan to fail?"' Corbin says. “We work with you on an ongoing basis and set you up with a plan.”

Staff are all ex-smokers and meetings can take place in people’s homes, he says. "We give you all the stop smoking tools, the patches and the lozenges, which can be part of your quit plan.” Ready Steady Quit is starting to recommend vaping to help people stop smoking, he says. “We know it’s less harmful than smoking and for many people, vape is a good transition. We’re not recommending taking up vaping but using it as an in between quit tool.” Studying a Master of Public Health at the University of Auckland, Corbin says he is considering taking a paper on vaping.

Ready Steady Quit helps people living in Auckland, Waitemata and the North Shore. Meanwhile South Auckland residents can get help from the Living Smokefree Service run by the Counties District Health Board. Phone Ready Steady Quit on 0800 500 601 or Living Smokefree on 0800 569 568 for more information.
