Studying for the NZ Certificate in Building Regulatory Environment through Future Skills has allowed Builder Sam McGill to take his career in a new direction after an injury.

Sam worked as a builder for more than five years before he hurt his back last August and needed surgery. His injury kept him away from work for a while.

“I was going a little bit insane, not doing anything, just kind of being at home,” he says.

Sam had a look online and came across Future Skills. He was encouraged to enrol in the NZ Certificate in Building and Regulatory Environment.

“It sparked my interest and I wanted to chase a career down that path,” says Sam.

He says the programme has allowed him to learn about the regulatory side of building and has been a really interesting way to move into a different career.

“While I was thinking that I might not be able to be a builder anymore because of my back injury, it opened up a whole new aspect of building.”

Halfway through the programme, he reached out to his local council, Hamilton City Council, to let them know what he was up to. They invited him out for a cup of coffee and gave him some advice on his assignments.

They also told him about a cadetship job opportunity coming up that could be right for him if he decided to continue on the NZ Diploma in Building Surveying next.

Sam took up the opportunity and will soon start the job with Hamilton City Council while working toward the NZ Diploma in Building Surveying with Future Skills.

Hamilton City Council Building Unit Manager, Cory Lang, was impressed by Sam’s passion and qualifications.

“We always find it challenging to recruit specialist qualified staff so when Sam applied for our Cadetship position, who was already enrolled in the Diploma programme and is clearly passionate about the industry, we knew it would be the perfect fit,” says Cory.

“It’s unfortunate that Sam’s injury meant he’s unable to be on the tools anymore but it’s fantastic to see him willing to not let that stop him. It shows great drive and determination and we’re excited to have him onboard.”

Sam’s glad he made the decision to enrol with Future Skills.

“I was able to not make a full career change but a career adjustment,” says Sam.

“This whole different side of things has opened up to me. I’m definitely more hyped up about it now.”
