Stay-at-home mum Yumna Faraz yearned to bolster her career prospects. So she turned to Future Skills Academy to upskill in our free programme, the NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 2).

The 28-year-old had found herself stuck at home caring for her four-year-old daughter when kindergarten was closed during Auckland’s first lockdown. “I realized I was just sitting at home feeling stressed so I decided to do something with my life,” Yumna says.

A kindergarten teacher recommended Future Skills Academy which prompted her to pursue a health career. “I learned about supporting the elderly and disability services with amazing teachers Maria and Jubilee who not only helped us with our online classes but also with technology. Maria was not just my teacher but also like a mother to me. She helped to build our confidence and learn how to deal with people at work. She taught us how to support different cultures, save the environment at work and understand the ten codes of rights.”

The course work helped with her practicum and armed her with valuable skills to support the elderly, Yumna says.

Before studying with us, she was a stay-at-home mum for eight years. Born in Karachi, Pakistan, she married at the age of 19. “I just finished intermediate school,” she says. “I thought a lot about continuing my studies but didn’t get the time.”

The Onehunga resident has been living in Aotearoa with her husband and daughter for the past two years. The graduate has her sights set on a promising career as a healthcare hero.
