Students and staff celebrated Samoa Language Week this month in a student-led event at the Manukau campus. The day allowed students to introduce others to the Samoan language, to share traditions, history and traditional cuisine.

Learners led the audience in prayer before entertaining onlookers with cultural song and dance. The celebration ended with people sampling superb Samoan dishes prepared by students.

This year’s theme for the week is, “Poupou le lotoifale. Ola manuia le anofale,” which means “strengthen the posts of your house for all to thrive.”

Chief Executive Officer Sam Alavi told guests our different cultures were an important aspect of what made New Zealand a more diverse community. “Imagine if all the flowers in the world looked the same and were all green,” Sam said. “Imagine how boring it would look after a while.

“It’s the same with our world. It’s all of the cultures and the people and the different things that we bring that gives beauty.”
