Tālofa lava! Afio mai!

It’s Samoa Language Week or Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa. Held from 29 May to 4 June, the week aims to maintain and celebrate the language and culture of Samoa.

We officially launched Samoa week at our Manukau campus. A visiting dignitary spoke about the event and a minister led everyone in prayer before they shared a traditional Samoan breakfast.

This year’s theme is Fa’aauau le Folauga i le Va’a o Tautai - Continue the Voyage with Competent Wayfinders of the Ocean. As part of the overarching theme of sustainability, the Samoan community chose a theme to portray the path of language revitalisation and maintenance. The focus also recognises the significance of having the right tools, good leadership skills, relationships, and the correct medium or va’a that is adaptable to braving the ocean and its elements.

This 12th annual event is being run by organisations FAGASA, Fotu ō Malama and SAASIA. The Samoan community also celebrates the 60th anniversary of Samoa Independence in 2022.

Samoa boasts a unique relationship with New Zealand. It is the only nation with which Aotearoa has a Treaty of Friendship. The treaty embraces a commitment to partnership and friendship along with a mutual undertaking to obtain fuller opportunities for social progress for Tagata Samoa. Language comprises a key part of this.
