Early Childhood Education

Originally from Bangladesh, Helena Mamtaz Mili has embarked on a transformative journey at Future Skills NZ to become an educator in an early childhood centre.

With a strong academic background that includes an honours degree and a master’s from Chittagong University, Helena’s early career as a kindergarten teacher helped pave the way for her passion for education.

After relocating to New Zealand, she was inspired to become an early childhood educator. Recognising the need for formal training in New Zealand’s educational system, she sought out Future Skills, after being encouraged to do so by a friend.

Currently enrolled in the New Zealand Certificate in Early Learning and Care (Level 2) programme, Helena’s particularly interested in understanding how children learn and develop emotionally.

She says her experience at Future Skills has been nothing short of “amazing”.

“The supportive environment has boosted my confidence, allowing me to embrace my future role in the childcare sector.”

She has also gained invaluable knowledge about health models, the Treaty of Waitangi, childhood nutrition, and the importance of learning through play - key elements for holistic child development.

While language barriers posed an initial challenge for Helena, as English is her second language, the support of the lecturers helped her get through.

“I’ve become more comfortable with communication which has enabled me to engage fully in the programme of study.”

One of the highlights of Helena’s journey has been her placement experience. She enjoyed observing the diverse ways children learn and found it enriching to connect theoretical knowledge with practical lessons at the early childhood education centre.
