Kunyakorn Nundee has thrived in her programmes at Future Skills Academy, despite initially struggling with her English ability.
Kunyakorn came to New Zealand from Thailand four years ago. She has previously worked as a teacher at a Thai school and as an assistant teacher at an international school.
She has been working as a housekeeper at a hotel since arriving in New Zealand but decided she wanted to upskill, improve herself, and try something new.
Kunyakorn spoke to some friends who told her Future Skills Academy was a very good place to study.
“When I contacted Future Skills they were very friendly and helpful and had a course that I wanted to do so I decided to join.”
She says she loved everything about her English, Maths and Digital Literacy class.
Her teacher was supportive and helpful and the friends she made in class also helped her feel relaxed and supported.
The teaching and learning systems helped her improve her English, she says. She was able to access online resources at home and practice talking with her teacher and classmates in class to improve her speaking and communication skills.
Kunyakorn says English was very hard for her at first and she struggled to express herself and understand others.
On top of her studies, she tried to improve her English by listening to music, watching movies, and speaking with her New Zealand family.
“If you want to improve your English, speaking and listening is very important,” says Kunyakorn.
After completing her foundation programme, Kunyakorn’s aim was to find a worthwhile industry with good job prospects. She also wanted to learn more about how to take care of her elderly mother-in-law.
She realised a healthcare programme would be the perfect choice.
“Being able to help the elderly and those who have reduced mobility, to make them comfortable and happy, makes me feel so good. So, I wanted to learn to help them even more.”
Kunyakorn has been a top achiever during her time at Future Skills having received awards for excellent attendance, literacy, and numeracy.
She says the secret to success is working hard and doing the best you can.
“I always try my best in what I have been assigned. l always try to keep thinking of my goals.”
