Deaf Aotearoa has launched its annual New Zealand Sign Language Week to celebrate one of the country’s official languages. The week is an opportunity for the deaf community to pay tribute to their language and culture. The goal is to boost awareness and understanding of New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) and the deaf community as well as empowering the community.

NZSL became an official language in 2006 after years of lobbying from deaf people and the first NZSL Week followed the next year.
