Gain real-world technical skills in budgeting and cost planning for construction projects in this hands-on learning programme at our Auckland International Campus on Queen St. This project-based programme is run in four blocks of study over two years. Each block lasts nine weeks. You need to dedicate about 35 hours per week to the programme.

According to NZ Talent.com, the average salary of quantity surveyors in New Zealand is $100,000. Entry-level positions start at about $70,000 per year and soar to up to $150,000 per year for experienced workers.

High job prospects

Employment is forecast to grow 3.3% per year out to 2023 and then 2.3% per year to 2028.

There are not enough trained quantity surveyors to meet demand. For this reason, quantity surveyors appear on Immigration New Zealand's long-term skill shortage list.

Domestic students

To enrol in this programme, you will need a minimum of 50 NCEA credits at Level 2, including 12 credits in Maths, and a minimum of 12 Literacy credits at NCEA Level 1 or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

You will also need access to a laptop, desktop computer or tablet and a reliable internet connection to complete this programme.

International students
  • A minimum of 50 NCEA credits at Level 2, including: 
    • 12 credits in maths, and
    • a minimum of 12 Literacy credits at NCEA Level 1

Cost Estimation

You will learn to analyse and present feasibility information and preliminary estimates to clients. You will be able to assemble quantity surveying documentation relevant to specialist and specific trade sections and measure a schedule of quantities for a small building of an individual trade section including services. 

Regulatory Environment

You will develop an understanding of the roles, standard documentation and administrative requirements of the construction industry. You will learn to operate within the statutory and regulatory environment as it applies to the construction and design of buildings.

Project Management

You will learn how to manage construction and resource allocation, programming and construction activities, for medium and large buildings. You will know how to evaluate and select materials and finishes for building projects, taking into account environmental aspects of the design and construction techniques to be used. You will be able to analyse, select and administer construction contracts including the preparation of a tender submission from trade sections and other financial components and value building works up to and including final account statements.

Construction Technologies

You will gain knowledge of structure and structural principles for building work including foundations, substructure, the envelope and the interior, and passive fire protection systems for medium and large buildings.

You will learn to use the following software:

  • Cost X
  • MS Project
  • Excel

Bachelor of Construction degree.

You will have access to classes each week where you can ask your lecturers questions about your assessments and learning.

Will this qualification be recognised in the industry where I will work?

Yes, this qualification is NZQA approved and recognised by New Zealand employers.

What will I earn after graduating with this qualification?

According to NZ Talent.com, the average salary of quantity surveyors in New Zealand in 2022 is $90,000. Entry-level positions start at about $65,000 per year and soar to up to $133,000 per year for experienced workers.

What do my job prospects look like?

Do I need to have any computer skills?

Yes, you will need basic computer skills to be successful in the programme.

What are the benefits of this qualification?

You can join the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NZIQS) as a free student member. Then, after graduating and gaining sufficient industry experience, you can apply for full membership. The NZIQS belongs to the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS), along with a number of other countries, and has reciprocal agreements with some other Institutes, making it easier to work overseas.

After graduating, you can gain direct entry into the final year of our Bachelor of Construction (Quantity Surveying) (Level 7).
