Veisinia Lesa: From backbreaking slog to comfortable career
22 September 2021

Graduate Veisinia Lesa used to endure painstaking labour 10 hours a night, hoisting heavy products and stacking pellets at a supermarket warehouse. “It was so hard- I used to get a sore back and legs,” she says.

Now she is reaping the rewards of a pain-free career after completing the NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Support Work Strand) (Level 3). Veisinia has secured two rewarding caregiving jobs at private hospitals in Manurewa and West Auckland. “I’m so happy with my new work. It’s easier and nothing hurts,” she says.

Samoa-born Veisinia came to New Zealand with her parents in 2019, leaving behind her 92-year-old grandmother. Her inherent passion for caregiving stems from growing up tending to her mother and grandmother. “I love helping people and looking after them. After the lockdown I’m going to go and visit my grandmother.”

Veisinia, 23, says she chose to study with us to forge her future. “I learned so much at the course.” The Manurewa resident dreams of becoming a nurse and plans to return to the academy next year to study a Level 4 Health programme.
